How to Adjust Your E-Bike’s Gears for Smooth Shifting

How to Adjust Your E‑Bike’s Gears for Smooth Shifting (No More Grinding)

In this hub: E‑Bike Maintenance & Troubleshooting Hub — browse the recommended reading order.

Most “bad shifting” is dirt + cable tension drift—not broken parts. Use this order so you don’t tune a dirty drivetrain.

Quick answers

  • Clean + lube first.
  • Most shifting fixes = barrel adjuster ¼-turns.
  • Limit screws prevent overshifts—set carefully.

The smooth shifting recipe (in order)

1) Clean + lube drivetrain

Start here: Chain & Drivetrain Cleaning Guide

2) Cable tension (barrel adjuster)

  • Struggles to shift to bigger cogs → add tension
  • Struggles to shift to smaller cogs → reduce tension
    Make ¼-turn changes, then retest.

3) Limit screws (H/L)

Set only after cable tension is close.

4) Test ride

Shift under light pedal pressure.
